Make A Difference: Community Clean Up.
Our Idea:
To introduce environmental education and awareness in a Grade 2 class at a local elementary school.
By introducing environmental education and awarness in this classroom, the students will:
“…one small act can have wide-ranging consequences…Do what you can where you can. Think less of the big picture than of what is achievable right now. Do whatever needs doing with a grateful heart and a mind clear of expectations” - Richard Wagamese
Connection to Principles
#2 (a) - Students are aware that everyone is responsible for pollution, and it is our responsibility to protect and preserve our planet for future generations.
#6 (d) - Through the "river" lesson, students learned about different kinds of hazardous materials, how they impact our environment, and what to do when dealing with disposing of those materials.
#4 (b) - Through both lessons, students learned the concept of cause and effect of pollution, and preventable strategies. (also connects to #2 (a))
#14 (a) - Social Justice - so though both instruction and application, the students were informed about the importance of pollution and the taking caring of our environment.
What did we did?
To introduce environmental education and awareness in a Grade 2 class at a local elementary school.
By introducing environmental education and awarness in this classroom, the students will:
- Learn about the importance of recycling and composting as a way to be environmentally friendly
- creating a sustainable place to live in the future
- Make a difference
- Feel a sense of belonging in their school and community

What did we did?
- Connected with a teacher at a local elementary school
- Set a date for both parts of the project
- Made sure permission slips were sent to parents
- Acquired all the materials needed
- Re-confirmed with Teacher before each planned date
- Took students to Buttertubs March to clean up
- Recycled and composted all garbage
- Did "The River" Activity with the class
